Language helps us understand the world, it helps us communicate with one another, and it helps us to pass on our traditions, both through spoken word and through writing. It's estimated that there are roughly 6,900 languages in use around the world today, and many of those languages derive from a select few, known as "classical languages." According to linguist George L. Hart, a classical language is one that is "ancient… has an independent tradition that arose mostly on its own, not as an offshoot of another tradition… and must have a large and extremely rich body of ancient literature." Some of the oldest classical languages still in use today include Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Persian, Chinese, Sanskrit, Arabic, and Tamil. Join the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia as we explore the importance of continuing to learn about classical languages in the modern era.
